The Wizards had high hopes of being able to defeat the New York Knicks, who came to town without their two best players, Carmelo Anthony, who's out with a groin strain, and Amar'e Stoudemire, who lost his brother in a car accident on Monday.
If that wasn't enough, Wizards point guard John Wall was more than a little tired of hearing all the hype surrounding New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, who has become all the rage after essentially playing two good games and was cheered loudly at Verizon Center every time he touched the ball.
"Nobody knew who he was until he had a good game against me," Wall said before the game, referring to a summer league game two years ago when Lin played well against Wall, scoring 13 points on 50 percent shooting.
