The Trail Blazers were a good team for about 12 minutes of their 103-96 loss to Houston Wednesday night at the Rose Garden.
That came from midway through the third quarter?when Portland trailed 69-50?to midway through the final period, when the Blazers had erased the deficit and tied the score at 82-82.
The Blazers (14-11) played with a purpose over that stretch that frustrates coach Nate McMillan, who wants that kind of performance on a more regular basis.
"Part of the challenge (as coach) is to figure out the right combinations of players, motivating these guys, getting them to play both ways," McMillan said. "We play in spurts."
Portland is 11-3 at home despite losing its last two.

The Trail Blazers say center Greg Oden underwent an arthroscopic procedure Friday to "remove debris" from his right knee, his fourth surgery since Portland selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft. The often-injured 7-footer had microfracture surgery on the same knee before the start of his rookie season, forcing him to postpone his NBA debut for a year.
