Not since Corey Koskie bashed 25 home runs in 2004 have the Twins finished a season satisfied with their production at third base. And for the third time in four seasons, Minnesota is seeking an answer to that deficiency in the free agent market.

Tony Batista lasted only 50 games in 2006, and Mike Lamb survived for just 81 games in 2008. But Twins general manager Bill Smith isn't letting those failures deter him from courting another veteran free agent for the job.

This time, the target is 35-year-old Casey Blake, and at least the Twins are familiar with him. The Dodgers' stretch-drive pickup played 29 games in two stints with Minnesota earlier this decade before signing with Cleveland, where he spent six productive seasons.

Ron Gardenhire figures he has one thing left to do as manager of the Minnesota Twins. "It's a very young and exciting team and, if we can fill in a couple of holes, we believe we are going to be right there with this team and win a World Series," Gardenhire said Thursday in a statement issued by the club after he agreed to a two-year contract extension.

The right-hander re-injured his elbow last week during a throwing session at the team's facility in Florida.
