Now that the Marlins have traded away Kevin Gregg, Matt Lindstrom has the inside edge on the closer's job going into spring training.
"I know my performance on the field will dictate what role I get, but I would love for them to give me the chance and have that spot," Lindstrom said after the Marlins sent Gregg to the Cubs for minor league right-hander Jose Ceda.
Gregg was the Marlins' highest-paid player last year, earning $2.5 million. But he started struggling in July and posted a 10.13 ERA in August before he went on the disabled list. He underwent surgery in late October on his left knee.
When Gregg went down in August, Lindstrom took over and proved he deserves a chance to handle the job full time.

A key legal obstacle was removed Friday for a new downtown Florida Marlins stadium, and the team will now determine whether the ballpark can open for the 2011 season. Marlins president David Samson said the months of delay caused by a lawsuit challenging the ballpark's financing package might push the completion date to 2012.

The Chicago Cubs acquired reliever Kevin Gregg in a trade with the Florida Marlins on Thursday, a move that appears to end Kerry Wood's career with the team. Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs. General manager Jim Hendry said Wood was deserving of a three- or four-year deal and the Cubs are not prepared to offer him...

Florida Marlins pitcher Henry Owens was suspended for the first 50 games of next season on Tuesday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The 29-year-old righty has not pitched in the majors since June 2007 because of shoulder trouble. "We are disappointed that Henry Owens received a positive test, and fully endorse the discipline outlined in the MLB policy," Marlins...

Starting pitcher Scott Olsen and outfielder Josh Willingham were traded by the Florida Marlins to the Nationals on Tuesday in a five-player deal that signals the start of Washington's efforts to revamp its roster after a major league-worst 59-102 season. "They talk about the plan they have with this team," Willingham said, "and I believe in it." The Marlins received second baseman Emilio Bonifacio...

The Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance against the Marlins over the team's decision not to give per diems to players at the team's spring-training facility while Florida was at home. The grievance, covering 13 players, was filed in September. The union claimed the players, who were on the disabled list, received their $88 daily per diem only when the Marlins were on the...

The Florida Marlins traded power-hitting first baseman Mike Jacobs on Thursday to the Kansas City Royals for relief pitcher Leo Nunez. The Marlins were shopping Jacobs because he was due a big raise in arbitration, and have plenty of options at first base. In exchange, they got a right-hander who throws in the mid-90s.

Hey, Freddy Sanchez, there's hope for you and the foundering Pittsburgh Pirates. Tampa Bay, Colorado, Detroit. All perennial doormats before reaching the World Series the past three years. Even the Chicago White Sox were a surprise in 2005. So pick a long shot. The days when the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves could book their playoff trips in April are long gone.
