The Mariners started out by going for a first-time general manager in October.
The new GM, Jack Zduriencik, followed suit in November when he hired Don Wakamatsu, most recently the bench coach in Oakland, as the club's manager for 2009.
Wakamatsu, the 14th manager in Mariners history, is the first Asian-American manager in major league history.
"I'm honored to have a history and to carry that on in a sense," said Wakamatsu, a native of Hood River, Ore. "If I can set somewhat of a stepping stone for future Japanese-Americans and just the equality in baseball, I'm glad to bear that torch." First and foremost, however, he will try to breathe some life into Seattle after the Mariners' worst season in memory, a season that saw Seattle finish with the worst...

New general manager Jack Zduriencik made more changes to the Seattle Mariners front office Monday, demoting director of player development Greg Hunter and promoting Pedro Grifol to director of minor league operations. Seattle also hired former Washington Nationals third base coach Tim Tolman as its new coordinator of minor league instruction, Grifol's old job.

Seven interviews in four, whirlwind days. Early breakfast meetings, power lunches, late-dinner talks and reference calls. All that has apparently whittled the Mariners' search for a new manager down to three final candidates and one or two possible wild cards. Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said he probably has three men he prefers over the other four and will likely bring them back for a...

The Seattle Mariners can have Ken Griffey Jr. back if they want him, now that he's a free agent. New Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik refused to say whether Seattle will make a push to sign its former franchise center fielder who is still beloved in the Northwest. That was hours after the Chicago White Sox made Griffey a free agent -- and free for a potential return to the team with which he...

New Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik isn't wasting time reorganizing the Mariners' front office. Zduriencik began remodeling the franchise Tuesday, firing scouting director Bob Fontaine and hiring a pair of former colleagues from Milwaukee. Jack Zduriencik grew up in western Pennsylvania. During summer vacations in college he would follow his father into the steel mill just across the state line in Youngstown, Ohio, as many sons in that proud, blue-collar region did four decades ago. So what would his rugged dad, who died in 1993, say if he could see his son now -- as the new general manager of the Seattle Mariners?
