While the Giants kept their eye on the elite free agents, including CC Sabatahia, they filled a big hole in the bullpen by signing setup man Jeremy Affeldt, 29, to a two-year, $8 million contract.

The lineup still has plenty of gaps, but the bullpen looks better with Affeldt, a left-hander who posted a 3.33 ERA in 78 1/3 innings with the Reds. For now, he's the primary setup man for closer Brian Wilson.

The relief corps was thin after the Giants severed ties with Tyler Walker, Brad Hennessey and Kevin Correia, and the 6-foot-4 Affeldt brings experience and a strong strikeout-to-walk ratio. He fanned 80 batters and issued 25 walks, and that's totally welcomed on a staff that walked the second-most batters in the league.

Affeldt, whose career ERA is 4.55, will get...

In this Sept. 24, 2008 file photo, Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt pitches in a baseball game against the Houston Astros in Houston. Affeldt has become the first of 171 free agents to agree to a contract, striking a two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants, Monday Nov. 17, 2007.

Jeremy Affeldt had considered looking for a job as a closer this offseason. Then San Francisco offered a contract the reliever couldn't pass up. Affeldt became the first of the 171 players who filed for free agency to agree to a contract, striking an $8 million, two-year deal Monday with the Giants -- a team that has wanted him for two years.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, this year's National League Cy Young Award winner, smiles as he is introduced during a news conference at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008. Lincecum took home pitching's highest honor in his second major league season. The slender kid with the whirling windup on Tuesday joined Mike McCormick (1967) as the only San Francisco Giants pitchers to win a Cy Young.

Tim Lincecum hung up the phone after learning the good news he'd been waiting more than a month to hear. "My reaction was 'Whoo hoo!"' the newly crowned NL Cy Young Award winner hollered for a news conference bigger than any the San Francisco Giants had seen since the days of home run king Barry Bonds.

The 42-year-old pitcher won his record 18th Gold Glove on Wednesday while outfielder Shane Victorino of the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies was among five first-time winners in the National League. Bud Selig didn't stick around. The baseball commissioner returned to Milwaukee to wait out the weather and a chance to resume Game 5 of the World Series. A day after the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays were stopped because of rain with the score 2-all after 5 1/2 innings, Selig rescheduled the completion of the suspended game for 8:37 p.m.

GIANTS-SHARE SEASON TICKETS SEC 106 ROW 12 AISLE (mission district) $1

I am offering equal shares (10 pairs of tickets per share) of our season tickets for the 2009 San Francisco Giants baseball season. Our seats are in Premium Lower Box Section 106 Row 12 on the aisle. This location is 12 rows behind first base. We will be doing a round-robin selection party at my home in January 2009. I already have 6 positions taken (4 for my partners from last year and 2 for me) and have two shares of 10 pairs left. That means that all 80 games except for Opening Day will be available to pick from. Note: Postseason rights are not included.

There will be 8 selections (one selection per share) per round and 10 rounds total. Order will be randomly selected and will continue in round robin manner. Cost is $760 for a pair of seats to 10 games (20 tickets at $38 each). This is a $1/ticket more than I pay and covers my shipping costs and having to buy the exhibition games. It is a substantial savings over the non-season ticket holder prices, even without adding the tickets.com fees. I also have the preseason games and these will be available for less money or I will give them away to charity.

Please call me or email if you are interested. This is a great opportunity to get great seats for cost!

As good as it gets without a charter seat license -- 2 seats in section 315, row 4, right behind home plate. As longtime season ticket holders we still have the old ticket prices of $18 each. We are looking for a fourth partner to purchase 20 games, which are selected "draft-style" going around the table taking turns. Post season tickets, should we be so lucky, are divided evenly among the 4 partners. If you are interested, please call 415-652-7906. We will be happy to send you a link to "the view" from our seats.
