The Cubs appear ready to head to spring training, but they've tied up a few last-minute details and still are being talked about in the trade and international free-agent markets.
Their biggest order of business was avoiding salary arbitration with ace starting pitcher Matt Garza, agreeing on a one-year deal worth $9.5 million with performance-based incentives.
The Cubs had offered $7.95 million while Garza was seeking $12.5 million. Cooler heads prevailed in the end.
The Cubs also were reported to have agreed to terms with Cuban left-hander Gerardo Concepcion on a multiyear deal worth at least $7 million. Team officials did not comment at week's end. It appeared a deal was well on its way to being completed, pending a physical exam and the completion of...

Chicago Cubs utility infielder Blake DeWitt lasted fewer than two seasons with the organization after former general manager Jim Hendry acquired him at the July trading deadline in 2010. DeWitt has been designated for assignment as of February 6, 2012.
6 Feb 2012 at 4:34pm
The Chicago Cubs have claimed infielder Adrian Cardenas off waivers from the Oakland Athletics and designated infielder Blake DeWitt for assignment. The moves were announced on Monday. Primarily a second baseman, the 24-year-old Cardenas hit .314, drove in 51 runs and scored 70 for Triple-A Sacramento last year.
4 Feb 2012 at 1:21pm
On Friday, February 3, Matt Garza and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a contract for 2012 that will pay the ace right-hander $9.5 million. Garza may also earn more with incentives, including the number of innings pitched. The deal helps the two sides avoid arbitration and hopefully end...

The Chicago Cubs and starting pitcher Matt Garza avoided arbitration on February 3, reaching an agreement for one year at $9.5 million. Garza is currently the Cubs' best option to start for the team on Opening Day. However, many believe that the Cubs may trade him at some point...

A $191 million spending spree bought Miami a new vibe but no guarantees entering its first season in a new ballpark.
3 Feb 2012 at 6:38pm
The Chicago Cubs and Matt Garza were scheduled to have an arbitration hearing on February 3, 2012. That won't be necessary now that both sides have reportedly agreed to a one-year contract. Garza will receive $9.5 million in 2012, a pay increase of approximately $3.6 million...
3 Feb 2012 at 3:22pm
Matt Garza agreed to a new one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, avoiding arbitration and keeping him in Chicago for now. It is entirely possible that the Cubs will decide to trade him soon though, especially now that he has a dollar value assigned to him.
3 Feb 2012 at 3:02pm
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated pitcher Jeff Niemann in salary arbitration Friday, improving clubs to 2-0 in decisions this year.
3 Feb 2012 at 2:50pm
The Chicago Cubs re-signed Matt Garza, their best starter from last season, and avoided salary arbitration with a one-year deal Friday. Garza signed for $9.5 million with incentive clauses, according to reports. With an arbitration hearing reportedly scheduled for Friday, the sides...
3 Feb 2012 at 2:48pm
Matt Garza is a Chicago Cub for at least a little bit longer. Since Garza is still a few years off from free agency, he was coming back to the Chicago Cubs one way or another. The one-year, $9.5 million contract is just the official paperwork to go along with it.
3 Feb 2012 at 11:19am
Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein has never shied away from acquiring talent from international markets. As the general manager of the Boston Red Sox, two of Epstein's most noteworthy transactions were when he signed Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki...
3 Feb 2012 at 11:10am
Right-hander Matt Garza has agreed to a $9.5 million, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, just before the scheduled start of a salary arbitration hearing in St. Petersburg, Fla. Friday's agreement was $725,000 below the midpoint between the $12.5 million the pitcher had asked for in arbitration last month and $7.95 million the Cubs had offered.

Cubs Season Tickets - Become a Season Ticket Holder Today! $1
Hello fellow Cubs fans. Here is your chance to be a season ticket holder (for this year and many more if you so choose.)
We have four seats together with the Combo Plan. Which means we have tickets to all the night, weekend, and holiday games (total of 55 games this year.) We want to sell half of those tickets to a partner, face value of course.
We have divided this year's games into two lists, "A" and "B". You pick whichever half you want. Fair enough? We obviously believe the two lists are equal because we are happy to take whichever list you don't prefer. (The ONLY game not on either list is opening day- we are keeping that one to keep our streak going.)
When it comes to playoff games, also an even split. We get the first game, you get the second, we get the third, you get the fourth, etc.
Seats are located in:
Aisle 431
Row 8
Seats 103-106
These are upperdeck seats. It is a really good view of the game. If you don't take our word for it, go to the Cubs website and examine the seating and pricing chart. You will notice that our section (Upper Deck Infield) is priced the same or higher than more than half of the seats in the lower deck. Why? Because they are as good or better seats! Added bonus, these seats are two rows away from being as close to the men's room as possible. Trust me, it pays off.
