The Cardinals lost free-agent right-hander Edwin Jackson to the Washington Nationals. That they weren't able to sign Jackson was not unexpected but the move meant that the Cardinals will have an unprecedented five picks out of the first 58 in this year's June draft.
Jackson was worth a compensatory pick. The Cards will get two picks for first baseman Albert Pujols and another for right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel to go with their own choice.
Jackson had sought a multi-year contract but signed with Washington for one year and $10 million. The Cardinals had shown more recent interest when agent Scott Boras' tone changed more to a one-year deal than one of several years. But they weren't about to go to $10 million. Light-hitting infielder Alex Cora has agreed to a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and would get an $800,000 deal if added to the 40-man roster. The 36-year-old played all four infield positions last season for the Washington Nationals while appearing in 91 games and making 16 starts at third base.

Brad Penny is headed to Japan. The 33-year-old righty will join the Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League, the team announced on its website Sunday. Penny, who pitched 12 seasons in the majors for six teams, indicated earlier in the week via Twitter he was headed for Japan.

Adding more playoff teams to Major League Baseball's postseason simply makes mathematical sense. It may mean having an earlier start to the season in the spring, but expanding the playoffs to include more teams would make MLB more in line with other sports leagues.
