A second five-year deal for right-hander A.J. Burnett isn't scaring the Blue Jays.
The latest revelation from the Burnett camp came recently when Darek Braunecker, Burnett's agent, stated he is looking for a five-year deal.
"The framework of a deal is five years," Braunecker told 1050 ESPN Radio in New York. "If a team can't do that, they will be behind the 8-ball a little bit."
The Jays, who wooed and signed Burnett three years ago with a five-year, $55 million offer, aren't scared off by having to pony up for another five-year pact.
That factor may aid them in their pursuit to re-sign Burnett after he opted out of the final two years of his contract.

A.J. Burnett must be hopelessly underpaid because he didn't think twice about telling the Toronto Blue Jays that his current contract guaranteeing him $12 million a year just wasn't going to cut it anymore. Hard to blame him, because fellow pitcher CC Sabathia figures to make double that by the time he reports to spring training a few months from now.

A.J. Burnett told the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday that he will opt out of the remaining two seasons of his $55 million, five-year contract. The pitcher will forfeit $24 million and can file for free agency. His contract called for a $6 million signing bonus, a $1 million salary in 2006 and $12 million in the remaining seasons.

The Blue Jays claimed left-hander Les Walrond off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The 31-year-old Walrond went 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA in six games with Philadelphia last season. Drafted by St. Louis in 1998, Walrond reached the majors with Kansas City in 2003 and pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 2006.

The Toronto Blue Jays made a pair of waiver claims Tuesday, getting pitcher Kelvin Jimenez from St. Louis and shortstop Angel Sanchez from Kansas City. Jimenez, a 28-year-old righty, was 0-0 with a 5.63 ERA in 15 games for the Cardinals last season. He is 3-0 lifetime with a 6.82 ERA in 49 games over two seasons.

The Blue Jays exercised a $2.5 million option on catcher Rod Barajas Friday, rewarding the 33-year-old after he batted .249 with 11 homers and 49 RBIs. Barajas agreed to a one-year deal with Toronto last January after one season with Philadelphia, and the Blue Jays guaranteed him $1.2 million: a $300,000 signing bonus, a $400,000 salary and a $500,000 buyout of the option.

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired two of the top four picks in the 2002 draft on Friday, signing converted pitcher Adam Loewen to a minor league contract and claiming right-hander Bryan Bullington off waivers.
