The Diamondbacks pledged to be a state-wide organization when they were formed in 1996, and they demonstrated that by holding spring training in Tucson and putting their Class AAA affiliate there.
Things already have changed, and are likely to change again. The D-backs' top minor league affiliate will move to Reno, Nev., in 2009, and it appears likely that the team will move its spring training facility to the Phoenix area after the White Sox spent $5 million to buy their way out of their lease for the spring facility they share with the D-backs. The White Sox will move to Glendale, Ariz., in 2009. Randy Johnson filed for free agency on Thursday after failing to reach a contract agreement to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 45-year-old lefty is five wins shy of 300 and "hopes to find a team where he can continue to pitch at a high level and contribute to another world championship," agents Barry Meister and Alan Nero said in a statement.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a new sponsor for the swimming pool beyond the center-field wall at Chase Field. RideNow Powersports has signed a three-year deal through 2011. Financial terms were not disclosed for the deal with the company that sells watercraft, ATVs and motorcycles. RideNow Powersports is the latest in a line of sponsors for the popular ballpark feature.

The Arizona Diamondbacks exercised the 2010 contract option on reliever Jon Rauch on Friday. The 6-foot-11 right-hander will make $2.9 million in 2010. The Diamondbacks would have had to pay $100,000 to buy out the contract. The Diamondbacks could have declined Rauch's option for 2010 and still controlled his rights, but he would have been eligible for salary arbitration.
