Tips for Costless Home Improvement
11 Mar 2010 at 8:14pm

"Do-It-Yourself" has always been regarded as for those people who have the time and patience for creating and reparing things. These days, knowing how to repair things around your own house is a must. It's not a matter of preference anymore, but a matter of necessity! Let's try to learn little things that will help us understand basic repair and home improvement ideas.

Remember that we are trying to save as much money, that's we're trying to take on the challenge of home repairs. With that in mind, try to make as little mistake as possible when doing repairs. Doing more damage can actually lead to a huge waste in money and time. And let's not forget the very effort that we're going to put into it.

Hole In Your WallsHoles are really not a pretty sight to behold. It's a supremely hair-raising situation when you happen to see a sudden black pit in your pristine wall. When it's a relatively small hole, you can simply use the "Plaster Patch Approach":Mark out a square where the hole is, and carefully cut it out with a small but sharp saw. Use that square cut out to make a model for the replacement. You'll start by making an outline on a plaster board, two inches larger on each side, making it the square more "rectangular in shape". Once you have created the patch, take it out and place it on the square cut on your wall. Put some pressure when you place it, firmly but gently. It should look like a weird patch on the wall now, but don't worry! You can sand it over so it will blend in with the texture and give it a little paint that matches the color of your walls!Be careful when you saw on your wall, you may just make matters worse when you're not paying attention!

Removing Built-Up Floor WaxAmerica loves its hardwood floors! One thing that they hate is how wax builds up slowly but gradually over the years! It's a hard chore to do, especially if you have no idea what products to use. Remember that no matter what kind of floor you have, your floor needs a little breather from the wax and polish.First of all, do a good sweeping of your entire floor. Move furniture away from the area so you can get the hidden dust and dirt underneath the upholstery and in the corners. As you go, apply a cheap floor cleanser on a rag and wipe all over the floor. You don't have to scrub it as much, but a little pressure is good. This will help in removing the wax easily, especially when you work one small area at a time. Next, you can now get a fine steel wool (available in all hardware and home improvement stores), as this will get the tough wax out, especially those in between the woods, and those patches which are extra heavy with wax built-up. The fine steel wool is great, because it doesn't really do much scratches and damage to the surface of your floor.

Just because you're being frugal doesn't mean that you can't repair the stuff inside your home. Get a grip and take some action, be confident that you can do a little repair here and there to save you money rather than just let someone do them for a hefty fee! But when you have no idea or experience in the big repairs, don't even attempt them. Take care of your house; you could do a lot worse than spend on a professional, so don't let the problems get too overwhelming and complicated before you do!

Sofas Down Through The Ages
15 Feb 2010 at 5:18am

There has been a great many styles and kinds of sofas down through the ages. These ubiquitous pieces of household furniture have a far more ancient history than many might believe, as a matter of fact. There have been versions of a sofa as a item in a household for literally thousands and thousands of years. Today, almost no home is without this very versatile and sometimes comfortable item.

The origins of the word 'sofa' come from an Arabic word used to describe the same kind of furniture. Arabs referred to a long reclining bench as a 'suffah, ' and 17th century travelers from Europe who were roaming about the Orient and the Arabian Peninsula or Middle East, in particular, noticed that they reclined or sat on a bench that was somewhat similar.

The two words 'sofa' and 'couch' are fairly interchangeable in modern day English, though the origins of 'couch' comes from the French word 'coucher, ' which is taken to mean something related to reclining or lying down. However, the French themselves did not refer to their own version of the sofa as a 'coucher.' Rather, they called their piece of furniture a canape.

Now, that particular word in the English language is used to describe something known as a finger food and not a sofa or couch. However, English craftsmen in the 15th century to the French word for the household item that they were creating that would eventually become the sofa and applied the French term 'coucher' to it. Naturally, it eventually became shortened to the word 'couch.'

Nowadays, most people are completely unaware that the word 'sofa' has its origin among the Arab-speaking people in the Orient, though they might suspect that the word 'couch' is possibly French in its origins. Regardless, these fascinating pieces of furniture actually go back much farther into the mists of history than just the pieces of furniture the French or English were playing around with.

In fact, ancient Romans and Greeks -- all men -- have their own version of the sofa. These benches also reclined and it was there that the men in Greek and Roman society would eat their dinners and take their ease. Women were not allowed to make use of the Greek or Roman version of the sofa, though. For them, it was a chair or something similar. One can see the injustice in this.

Sofa development since the 16th century can mainly be credited to English and German craftsmen. Both looked at how to make something that people could sit on that would also be comfortable. They would construct a wooden frame and then begin to pad it with various natural materials like bird feathers. Of course, all of these materials would need to be wrapped in something durable and then covered with something attractive.

Most scholars and historians trace the development of the modern sofa to that era. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was rare that a middle class or even lower class family did not have a sofa in their own household, and these very versatile and highly attractive pieces of furniture soon became extremely important. Ranking just behind beds, sofas probably are the second most popular piece of furniture.

Pool Tables - Are They More Than Just Inanimate Pieces Of Furniture?
15 Feb 2010 at 4:11am

If you listen very carefully, you will discover that pool tables say things, and all you have to do is listen! They tell you things about the people standing around them and this can be used for your purposes. They also tell other people about your agenda, and just depending on what this is, it could be used to advantage.

You have to open your eyes too, because a pool table can show you things. The way players posture tells you a lot about the human condition; its value, integrity, shyness or arrogance, and this posturing shows you how to interpret and intercept this human condition. The pool hustler, in order to be successful needs to have the instinct to interpret this posturing and intrinsically know what is weak, strong, right or wrong.

If you regard a pool table as more than and inanimate piece of furniture, you will learn a good deal from it. Playing this game can measure the hustler in you and in order to win, you have to engage in play with the mind of a hustler.

Observation of others is the way in which the pool table hustler becomes articulate. This critical self awareness and awareness of others through their activity and speech, means that you are an observer, rather than a participant, much like a yogi.

Even the way players lean over them or against them tells you something. You may be able to get a reading from this regarding what puts them off their game. If they stand with their feet together or apart tells you about their balance and their experience of playing pool. This subtle interaction with the table (or other piece of nearby furniture) tells you how their physical balance is and balance is integral to playing good pool.

In this game, everyone is a liar, no matter what anyone says to you, but the pool table (although a piece of furniture) doesn't lie. It exposes them, and observers can see if they are thieving whores or blatant fools. Competition and gaming tables, brings out the thieving whore or blatant fool in all of us, including me.

The options provided by the shape of the table, it being rectangular is interesting, particularly regarding controlling the game. For example it is definitely not polite to stand behind a person taking a shot, but is not bad manners to stand next to them. It is also not bad manners to stand in front of them and this can be done most politely, but it can also be very intimidating.

The secret to not having the table disclose you as a hustler is not to 'languish' around it. Standing next to people or in front of them in an intimidating yet polite manner! Not languishing (look the word up in a dictionary) is the pool players 'poker face', in other words. If you languish successfully around the table, other players won't be able to learn anything about you.

Communicating well with the pool table makes you a successful pool player. This is not about art and life being imitations of each other, it is about the fact that both art and life are artificial, and pool tables can teach you some valuable lessons.

If you want the easiest method for telling if the table is good or not, then look at the price tag. Higher-priced tables generally cost more to make, due to the increased quality of the materials and manufacturing. When you buy a high-priced pool table from a well-known manufacture, you generally get a pool table of the highest quality on the market.

Pool Tables: Things To Look For If You Want To Buy One
12 Feb 2010 at 8:00am

Pool tables, also known as billiard tables, have been around for centuries. They originated in France in the 15th century and, at that time, pool was a game for the nobility.

Pool tables have been manufactured from a variety of materials but the preferred material for the table bed itself has been slate since the early 1800s. Having high quality slate for your table is a key factor for an enjoyable game, as it impacts how smoothly and quickly the balls will roll. Although beds made from a single piece of slate are more expensive, they are not optimal as the heaviness can make it sag over time. Better, is a design of 3 pieces of high quality slate.

The material covering the slate is also a factor in the quality of the table and the roll of the balls. Although it is commonly referred to as felt, this is a misnomer. The cloth is made of either woven wool or a wool/nylon blend. The better cloth is made from a weave that is napless, which allows the balls to roll faster. If the table is planned for heavy use, such as in a bar, it will be made from a thicker cloth that will stand up to more wear and tear. However, this will also slow the balls down.

Interestingly, the cloth originally was always green, because the game was developed from one that was played outside. You will still see more green than anything else, but occasionally you will see cloth that is blue or red as well. Whatever color it is, it should not distract from the play.

Pool tables can come in different sizes as well, and vary depending on whether you are in the U. S. Or England. In the U. S., the preferred size is 9 feet but, if you are thinking of buying one for your home, you need to make sure that you have enough room for a table of that size. Do not forget that you have to have enough room to use the cue sticks comfortably no matter where you are around the table.

All pockets are not made the same on pool tables. Some are considered loose, that is, it is easier for the ball to sink in. Others are termed pro pockets as they are tighter fits and you need to be a more experienced player to shoot well with them. You will need to decide whether you want pockets that you can grow into or you prefer the loose ones for easier and friendlier play.

If you are going to purchase a high quality, nine-foot table, this is literally a heavy investment. The company you purchase from is going to need to install it properly and make sure it is level. A side note to this: be sure that the floor in the room you are putting it in is level as well. Make sure there is a good guarantee policy and that they will come back to service the table. The level will need to be checked again as it will alter somewhat as the table settles into place.

Pool tables can be investments for generations, so make sure to do your homework and get a high quality table that will last. You will get more value for your money and more enjoyment from your game as well.

The most expensive type of table is the one that is custom designed and built to a customer's specification. Design will usually be very heavy and extremely elaborate. Of course this type of table will be unique; no two will ever look the same. Only the best materials are used and the quality of build will be second to none. They are usually only bought by the rich or famous and they will naturally be guaranteed for life.

Vinyl Vs Fiber-Cement Siding
22 Jul 2009 at 8:39pm
Vinyl Vs Fiber-Cement SidingAs a homeowner, you want a low maintenance siding that lasts a lifetime and will dramatically enhance the appearance of your home. Many new home builders are choosing fiber-cement siding over the more traditional vinyl siding. Here's why:Fiber-cement siding can be painted any color the homeowner desires without having to reside the house. It is more economical and versatile than having wood siding, simply because of color retention and doesn't have the long-term maintenance issues of sanding, scraping and priming. The color of vinyl siding can't be changed and is susceptible to fading over time. You can't paint vinyl because it was designed to expand and contract over time, causing the paint to peel and crack. Furthermore, if repairs need to be made to vinyl siding, finding a perfect color match can be difficult, especially if it is aged and faded.Fiber-cement siding is ideal for capturing the beauty of wood without the added work and cost. It offers beautiful, natural textures and realistic wood grains you would see on cedar siding. Fiber-cement siding comes in a wide array of colors and shapes, giving you the ability to create something unique and striking.Fiber-cement siding is durable and guaranteed to last for up to 50 years. It can sustain harsh climates, such as those found in the snowy northern states, or the sweltering heat and humidity of the southern states. It's long-term durability, due to a higher quality interlaminate bond strength, is one reason why most fiber-cement siding manufacturers offer it with a transferable 50-year limited warranty. On the other hand, vinyl siding becomes brittle when exposed to cold temperatures and can therefore be damaged by hail, tree limbs or other flying debris. The strength and thickness of fiber-cement siding provides resistance against hail and wind, protecting your home from damage, as well as being coated with a top of the line sealer for protection against impacts and moisture. Vinyl siding is thin and provides little resistance to airborne hazards.Fiber-cement siding is non-combustible, meaning it won't burn easily and is approved for fire-rated construction. Vinyl siding will melt or burn when exposed to a high source of heat or flame, and will also release toxic vapors when burnt.Fiber-cement siding is strong and durable. When painted, it is indistinguishable from the natural look of wood siding. It is extremely mildew resistant, making it a wise choice for those who live in high-humidity areas. It comes pre-primed from the manufacturer, so all the homeowner or contractor has to is decide on what color it should be painted - and it can be easily repainted years down the road with little prep-work. Furthermore, it not only locks out moisture, but it also avoids the damage caused by termites. It just may be the ideal and economical choice for your home.By: Budda OliverMr. Oliver is a marketing agent of Blue Ridge Exteriors. Laminate Floors - How to Install and Maintain This Attractive Alternative to ...

Laminate Floors - How to Install and Maintain This Attractive Alternative to HardwoodWhen installed and maintained properly, your laminate flooring will give you many years of service. In fact, one of the best features of laminate is how easy and inexpensive it is to care for. Anyone considering laminate floors should be aware of the differences between them, as these differences often determine installation methods and care requirements. Laminate Floors- How to Install for the Best Results Before you install your laminate floor, keep in mind that most of the problems that arise later with laminate floors are due to improper installation. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your particular flooring. In general, there are three basic types of installation for laminate- standard, pre-glued and snap-and-lock. The one you choose will depend on your budget, skill level and the kind of design you desire. Standard installation requires that you glue the laminate directly to the subfloor using laminate adhesive. This method is not appropriate for floating floors, but keeps the flooring securely attached in much the same way as tile flooring. Pre-glued laminate installation is for floors that come with adhesive already applied to the back. You simply wet the glue with water and secure to the subfloor. Snap-and-lock installation is probably the most popular method of laminate floor installation. It allows the do-it-yourselfer to easily lay down the floor without the use of adhesives. Snap-and-lock floors snap together using a locking tongue and groove mechanism. All methods of installation require a flat, level surface, and don't forget to acclimatize your flooring to your home for at least 48 hours prior to installation to prevent buckling. Proper Maintenance of Laminate Floors for Years of Lasting Beauty Once your floor is properly installed, you need to keep it looking good. Like hardwood, a clean laminate floor is a happy floor. Unlike hardwood, however, laminate requires no sanding, sealing or refinishing. A simple damp mopping with mild detergent will maintain the good looks of your laminate floor for years. Another tip is to keep the room temperature at about 72 degrees and monitor the humidity to prevent warping. Always lift furniture when moving it or you may scratch your laminate. Use felt pads whenever possible. Other common sense measures include removing dirt and oil from the edges of the floor and around area rugs, and avoiding abrasive cleaners. Follow these guidelines for the installation and care of your laminate floor and you will get to enjoy its beauty for many years.By: Elizabeth HruschFor more information about laminate floors visit http://www.bestlaminate.net.

An Overview of Insulation Types
20 May 2009 at 3:29am
An Overview of Insulation TypesFiguring out which type of insulation to use is so much easier when you have an idea of what the different types are, how effective they are, and where they are used. You want to make sure that you get the best product for the job that you can afford. One of the slightly more expensive options out there is residential foam insulation. However, you will recoup your costs over time with the additional savings in energy costs that you will get through using expanding foam. Because it expands to fill any spaces where air and moisture might enter the home, it is one of the best types available. It is easily applied through a spray nozzle. For something more affordable, you could get one of the forms of blow in insulation. Commonly used types include fiberglass (the most effective), mineral wool, and cellulose. You will need a thicker layer than you would if you used fiberglass or mineral wool batts, but this will save you some money and make it easier to insulate hard to reach areas.More common in the UK, foam roof insulation is now becoming more popular in the US. In the past it wasn't used since it was believed that roofs needed to be vented. If your roof is vented you can still use it for your attic floor, however, it won't control the temperature of the attic as well. One of the places you should be sure to insulate is your attic. Attic ceiling insulation is especially important since heat rises and you don't want all your heat in the winter to go right out through your roof. You want it to be trapped in the house and keeping your warm.Although many people do not use garage door insulation, it can really help to regulate the temperature of your garage and make it a more useful place. You might also find that you save on your energy bill if you use it and have an attached garage. It is very easy to install yourself with kits available on the internet.Anyone with a steam or hot water based heating system should also be sure that they are properly insulating their pipes with steam pipe insulation. Other types cannot withstand the temperatures of these pipes, and without the correct product you will lose heat quickly and it won't reach the farthest areas of your house. Finally, cellular glass is a fire resistant, strong type of commercial insulation that is used for insulating roofs and special types of pipes and equipment, especially when there are either very hot or very cold temperatures involved or when it is important that the product be waterproof.By: Simon HarrisSimon Harris writes about insulation at http://www.insulationanswers.com

4 Common Types of Air Purification Systems
20 May 2009 at 3:23am
Air Purification SystemsIn-home air purification may not be on the top of your priority list, but it should be. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that "indoor air pollution is one of the top five most urgent environmental risks to the public." In fact, numerous studies have concluded that indoor air quality can be up to 5 times more harmful than outdoor air. For this reason, it is imperative to at least consider the possibility of using an air purification system in your home. While there are many types, all air purification systems can dramatically decrease the amount of allergens, dust, pollen, dust mite feces, and other harmful irritants in your home.Media FiltersThis is the simplest and most commonly found type of purification device. This type of system forces air through a filter, which can be made from various types of materials, such as paper, cotton, or other fibers. The filter then traps particles through size exclusion, removing them from the atmosphere inside your home.Electronic FiltersSometimes called Ionizers, these filters use charged electrical surfaces to generate electrically charged ions. The ions attach themselves to particles, which are then elecrostatically attracted to a charged collector plate, effectively removing the particle form the airstream. These systems can usually be found either with or without a fan.HumidificationThese systems are pretty self-explanatory. A filter is combined with a humidifier, allowing you to add needed humidity to your home. The benefit of humidification is that many bacteria and viruses can only exist or thrive in low-humidity environments. By increasing the humidity level in your home, you can effectively decrease the levels of harmful illness-causing agents in your home. Increased humidity can also help with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems.Ultraviolet FiltrationThese systems are sometimes referred to as UVGI systems, which stand for Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation.
