What do the critics have to say? Machete started as a trailer for a fake movie, then became a real movie. It's a curious route to the multiplex, but critics say this old-school exploitation flick largely delivers -- if you're in the mood some sleazy fun with zero pretense. Also, critics say Going the Distance is light on substance and relies too heavily on the natural charm of its leads. 2 Sep 2010 at 2:09pm No matter how talented they are, most child stars have a hard time making the jump to grown-up roles -- and Drew Barrymore, with a pair of rehab stints under her belt before she was old enough to drive, initially seemed to be having a harder go of it than most. But Barrymore's turbulent youth was just the beginning of a career that has seen her starring in, producing, and even directing some of the most successful films of the last 20 years (not to mention one of the most memorable cameos, courtesy of Scream). With Going the Distance arriving in theaters this weekend, Barrymore is poised to add to her already-impressive $1.5 billion lifetime gross, so we thought now would be the perfect time to take a look back at the brightest critical highlights. It's time for Total Recall! 2 Sep 2010 at 2:00pm Roger Ebert is a highly respected critic, oft-retweeted pundit, and Web commerce vanguard -- and now, with the release of his new book "The Pot and How to Use It: The Mystery and Romance of the Rice Cooker," he's a published epicurean. 2 Sep 2010 at 11:38am To celebrate the upcoming release of the Tron sequel, Tron:Legacy, Disney is planning on replacing the Glow Fest with ElecTRONica, a big dance party themed around the film. Tell the folks at Moviefone, and you could help make it a winner in the first-ever Moviegoer's Choice roundup. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:30am "Machete" might be his first starring role, but Danny Trejo has been one of Hollywood's most recognizable actors for years. In a new profile, the Los Angeles Times looks back at his distinguished career. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:25am When he carves a bloody revenge in "Machete" this weekend, Danny Trejo will be extending a rich Hollywood tradition. Here are ten more films that are best served cold. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:22am "Going the Distance" may not be getting the best reviews, but it has at least one thing going for it: "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star Charlie Day. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:18am He derailed a once-promising career with a string of dud films -- and now Ben Affleck is building a comeback. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:15am Angelina Jolie has departed Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," leaving the project without a star...and with its future very much in doubt. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:12am The cast of the fourth "Mission: Impossible" continues to expand, with Paula Patton ("Precious") signing on to appear alongside Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, and Ving Rhames. 2 Sep 2010 at 4:07am Even after nearly 30 years, Bruce Campbell isn't tired of talking about "The Evil Dead" -- as evidenced by his commentary on the new Blu-ray, as well as this new interview with the Los Angeles Times. 2 Sep 2010 at 3:49am According to Production Weekly, Marvel's "Runaways" is set to begin filming next March -- although it may have a different name. 2 Sep 2010 at 3:46am Details have started to emerge regarding Barry Levinson's upcoming "eco-horror" film, now titled "The Bay." 2 Sep 2010 at 3:40am Jessica McNamee has joined the cast of "The Vow," a Rachel McAdams/Channing Tatum tearjerker about the very romantic aftermath of a horrible car accident. |
