84 Mazda RX-7 GS 5 speed manual needs engine rebuild. $500 OBO
I had a sudden and severe overheat on the motor back in August. I repaired the radiator as I believe it was the culprit but unfortunately it appears the coolant seals are blown as coolant is leaking out of the motor. I don't have the time or money to repair it so i'm looking to sell it to an enthusiast who is willing to buy it and repair it so she can see the road again. I just can't bring myself to take a piece of history to a salvage yard. I just put on brand new set of tires all around just a week before the overheating incident those are worth $300 alone...
The motor is the 12A 1.1L Wankel rotary with 152 000 miles on it. The motor has ran great as my daily driver and never gave me any problems for the last year and a half until the overheat. The only annoyance is the carburetor which probably needs work to get the engine to run better in the cold. Otherwise this has been a good little runner.
I replaced the clutch pressure plate release (throwout) bearing release (slave) cylinder and master cylinder back in February. It hasn't given me any problems since and the clutch has tons of grip and never slips. The 5 speed manual feels great and has never given me problems. It has fresh oil as of the clutch change in February.
Brakes work great but there is a ton of pedal travel until you actually start getting good braking power. I've replaced the brake master cylinder and fully bled the system but the problem remains. I was going to replace the booster but never got around to it. Front pads have plenty left and the rear drums seem to work fine but might need adjusting. Hand brake holds but barely...
The suspension is ok but the shocks are done so the ride is soft and a little bouncy because of this. The bushings are worn but still holding well. Stock anti-roll bars front and rear which is nice.
The manual steering is loose probably needs adjusting or the rack replaced. The tierod ends and balljoints seem good so i'm sure the problem is in the steering rack.
There is an air conditioning pump but the main line is broken so I removed the accessory belt for it. I don't know if the pump works or not it was in this condition when I got it and I don't mind the hot summer days so I never bothered to fix it. However all the AC lines are still there.
The exterior looks terrible... no paint. The guy who had it before me had put primer on it (over some the badges for some reason) but never got around to painting it. I don't have the time or money so I never bothered to get it painted either. However the body is in good condition and is all original from what I can tell. There is only a minor dent in the front right corner that probably could be repaired by someone who knows what they are doing.
The interior is probably the weakest part of the car. The dash is almost completely destroyed from the test of time a couple switches are broken and don't work. The seats are some ugly and poorly fitted aftermarket seats fitted by one of the previous owners but they do work. Original carpets up front are good. Carpet in the hatch area is disintegrating. The rest of the interior trim pieces are either in poor condition or missing. The original stereo is not there and there is a terrible condition aftermarket CD player in its place. However all the speakers are still ok and there is a basic amp and 10" sub that the previous owner left. It works fine but the CD player has some issues. The front windshield has a crack all across the bottom but it doesn't block visibility for me so I left it. It was that way when I got it and has not got worse. The side windows and rear hatch windows are heavily tinted by the previous owner. I personally hate it and its too dark but whoever did the work did a very nice job.
The driver side door handle broke off and then the inside door handle broke as well. I've been lazy and haven't bothered to get replacement parts to fix it and instead have just been getting out the sunroof. The passenger door works perfect though. Rear hatch works fine as well but in order to close it you have to apply firm pressure. Hood opens and closes fine but you have to push the release knob back in after opening.
As far as the electrics go headlamps and headlamp motors are good never had any problems with them. All turn indicators tail lamps and brake lamps work fine. The spring in the turn indicator stalk is broken and doesn't self-cancel after completing a turn i'm sure its a simple fix but I never got around to it. Hazards do work but due to a wiring issue they only work if the turn indicator is set to left turn while hazard switch is on. Otherwise you just get a turn indicator when the hazard switch is in the on position. Windshield washer fluid sprayers do not work I removed the reservoir but it still with the car. Rear defroster is not wired so I don't know if it works. All gauges and check lights work fine except the oil pressure isn't working. It used to work until after I replaced the clutch i'm not sure what I did and never bothered to fix it. Electric mirrors work great.
All in all this car needs some work but for a unique classic is not bad because it has a solid frame and body panels. I think this would make an awesome and fun daily driver if fixed up or an even more awesome and fun track car. The car is so light and well balanced it is a pure joy to drive the twisty mountain roads or a nice road course. If I had the time and money I would strip the car and put in a roll cage beef up the engine suspension brakes wheels and tires and track the crap out of it. Unfortunately I don't even have the time and money to get it running again so it has to go.
